Kakumba Abdul (P.7)
Kakumba Abdul, a 17-year-old born and raised in Lukubo village in Buikwe district, faced significant challenges from a young age. Tragedy struck when Abdul was 11 years old, both his parents succumbed to HIV/AIDS, leaving him orphaned and thrust into the role of head of the household at an age when most children are still carefree and dependent.
Recognizing the importance of education and the need to support his grandmother, he took on the role of the breadwinner for his small family. He began working to put himself through school, Abdul turned to burning and selling charcoal, a labor-intensive task that he is managing alongside his studies, also selling maize, or repairing small electric gadgets like radios to make ends meet.
His commitment to learning and improving his circumstances is evident in his daily routine. Juggling work and school, he continues to strive for a better future, holding onto the hope that education will open doors to opportunities that can lift him and his grandmother out of poverty.
